Quick Checklist (Save This!)
Before the storm
Clear 3–4 feet around the outdoor unit: pick up branches, toys, tools, and loose decor.
Tie down anything that could become a projectile (trash bins, patio furniture).
If your area is prone to flooding, turn the system off at the thermostat and the breaker before heavy rain arrives.
Protect against surges (HVAC-rated surge protector or whole-home protection).
Photograph your equipment for insurance.
Schedule a pre-storm check if your unit’s overdue for service: AC Maintenance.
During the storm
Keep the system off if flooding is likely or power is unstable.
Do not cover the unit while it’s running; if you already shut it down, a breathable, well-secured cover can limit debris—but remove it before restarting.
Never operate your AC on an undersized portable generator; voltage drops can ruin the compressor.
After the storm
Visually inspect: standing water, tilted unit, bent fan guard, damaged refrigerant lines, loose wires.
Do not restart if the breaker tripped, you see/suspect water intrusion, or you hear/see anything unusual.
Once power is stable and the unit is dry, restore power at the breaker, then thermostat, and listen for abnormal sounds.

Step-By-Step: Before the Storm Hits

If you shut down the system for an approaching storm, you may place a breathable cover and secure it (never while operating).
2) Electrical Safety & Surge Protection
A dedicated HVAC surge protector (or whole-home unit) can help protect boards and the compressor when power flickers.
If your neighborhood loses power often, shut the system down before the lights go out to avoid hard restarts when power returns.
3) Thermostat & Home Settings
Pre-cool the home a few degrees so it stays comfortable longer if you decide to power down.
If you have a smart thermostat, confirm battery backups and Wi-Fi settings.
Riding Out the Storm
If water rises toward the condenser or you notice flickering power, leave the system off until conditions stabilize.
Keep doors and windows closed to maintain indoor temperature and humidity as much as possible.
Avoid opening the air handler closet during the storm; keep that space dry and undisturbed.
After the Storm: Safe Restart & Recovery
1) Inspect First
Look for pooling water under or around the condenser, bent fins, loose panels, or damaged wires.
If the outdoor unit was submerged or splashed by saltwater, do not attempt to run it—schedule an inspection: AC Repair.
2) Power Up the Right Way
Ensure the system and surrounding area are dry.
Flip the breaker on.
Set the thermostat to cool and wait a few minutes.
Listen for grinding, rattling, or short cycling. If anything sounds wrong, shut it off and call us.
3) Tackle Humidity & Odors
Run the AC continuously for several hours to pull moisture out.
Replace the filter if it got damp or dirty; upgrade to the right MERV level for your system.
